Scott Pilgrim Vs The World (2010) : A Review

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World movie reviewWhat does a movie that blends the genres of action, romance, musical, fantasy and comedy remind you of? Definitely Bollywood for me. But, Edgar Wright has managed to put all these elements into a crazy Hollywood movie which is not even remotely Bollywoodish in nature. Based on the graphic novel series by Canadian cartoonist Bryan Lee O'Malley, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is a fantasy-musical-action-comedy along the lines of Stephen Chow flicks which are mad, energetic but also extremely entertaining.

The movies revolves around Scott Pilgrim(Michael Cera), a bass guitarist for the band named "Sex Bob Ombs". He starts dating a Chinese high school girl Knives(Ellen Wong), but one fine day when he meets Ramona, he falls head-over-heals in love with her. From that moment, he starts ignoring Knives and begins wooing Ramona. But little does he know that to gain Ramona's love he has to fight her seven evil exes.

Edgar Wright describes the movie as a musical where instead of breaking into songs they break into fights. And this best describes the happenings in the movie that begins with an 8-bit Universal logo, setting the tone for the movie. Styled as a Nintendo video game, Scott Pilgrim has great fight sequences that are choregraphed with wildest imagination. Each fight with an ex has a definitive style of its own and increase in difficulty like the video game levels. They remind you specifically of Stephen Chow's Shaolin Soccer and Kung-fu Hustle. The fight with the evil twins in particular is quite similar to the one with the Harpists in Kung-fu Hustle. You can also see a bit of the 60s Batman's POWs and WHAMMs.

This is director Edgar Wright's first American movie and though it lacks the brilliance of his earlier comedies (Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz), it manages to keep him in a respectable position. The casting for the seven evil exes is a high scorer for the movie. Brandon Routh, Chris Evans and Jason Schwartzman play three of the seven evil exes and contribute to some of the most funniest moments in the movie. Michael Cera is his usual self but this time he is more bearable as the guy willing to fight to win his love. Ellen Wong gives an impressive performance considering that this is her debut feature film. Unfortunately for her, she is of Chinese origin which makes it difficult for her to make it big in the Hollywoodland.

The movie, though tends to get repetitive with the fights, is worth a watch for its sheer madness and exuberance.
