Chloe (2009): A Review

Chloe movie reviewThese days, you would find a plethora of movies that start with an interesting premise and run out of juice midway. Atom Egoyan's Chloe, a remake of a French erotic thriller Nathalie,  is an addition to that list.

In the movie, David(Liam Neeson) and Catherine(Juliane Moore) are a middle aged couple who have found a perfect balance between their professional and personal life. When David fails to turn up for his surprise birthday party, Catherine goes through his messages and starts suspecting him of cheating. His flirting with the waitress the following day, further adds to her suspicion. She decides to keep a tab on him and hires an escort named Chloe(Amanda Seyfried). Chloe has to meet David in a restaurant, start a conversation with him and report back to Catherine on the developments. Chloe updates her with the stories of their meetings that are leading to a sexual relationship. Her stories start arousing Catherine and she finds herself gradually getting attracted to Chloe, leading to some complex situations.

Chloe has an elegant tone which makes you believe that you are going to have a quality experience, but half way through, it looses track of the story and the title character completely. Chloe's character is extremely inconsistent and an attractive girl her getting obsessed with a not-so-attractive-middle-aged-woman is slightly difficult to digest. Amanda Seyfried is smoking hot, but with her limited range of expressions, she adds further to the inconsistencies of the character. She should probably stick to the teen romance fare. The ending too is quite unimaginative, with a bit of Fatal Attraction thrown in. Liam Neeson has very little to contribute in terms of the screen time, but gives a sincere performance. Juliane Moore gets the meatiest role of the lot, as the helpless wife which gives her a good scope to emote and she doesn't disappoint. Apart from Moore's performance, only other upside of the movie is its Cinematography. The movie is extremely beautiful to look at with the well lit interiors and bright scenic exteriors of Toronto.

Overall, Chloe is an average movie and can be be given a chance only when there is an absence of an alternative.
